…a building…indebted to tradition and exhibiting a certain stringency that fits in perfectly on Cathedral Square, yet is still revolutionarily innovative, because it points the way into the future, when nature and people’s dreams will again be accorded an important role. (Hundertwasser, 1999)
The Hundertwasser project fits into an architecturally unique ensemble that includes a Gothic cathedral, a Romanesque monastery and the state parliament built in a mixture of baroque and classical styles. At the same time, it represents the antithesis of the nearby bank and other buildings with post-war architecture.
All of the roof areas were returned to nature. The bands of ceramic material that run diagonally from bottom to top, structuring the facade, are like merlons in a battlement.
The inauguration took place October 3, 2005.
