20th anniversary of Ronald McDonald House in Essen

01. July 2025
A roof landscape with trees which can be walked on, where the diversity of spontaneous vegetation converges with the creativity of man, where children’s souls can develop like the leaves of the trees growing on the roof. Hundertwasser, 1994

In August 1999 Hundertwasser drew the initial sketches for this Ronald McDonald house in Germany. It is a temporary home for families with seriously ill children who are being treated at Essen University Hospital. Hundertwasser chose a site in the middle of Gruga Park, accepting the commission because he was interested not only in the social and human components, but also in demonstrating that the building could be constructed without destroying nature, indeed, that after the building was completed there would be even more nature than before. These were also the conditions that made it possible to locate the building in the middle of a nature preserve park.
