In the years 1949 and 1950 Hundertwasser lived in St. Mandé as a guest of the Dumage family, in a building belonging to the house, the former hunting pavilion of the Comtesse Castiglione, a mistress of Napoleon III. He painted the mural together with his friend René Brô on a brick wall on the second floor.
